Welcome to the SELF page. SELF stands for Social Emotional Learning Focus. Time in school is set aside to discuss issues that come up that affect our self-esteem which then affects our ability to learn.

Students will be introduced to four units. The first unit is based on self. We get to know ourselves better including our strengths and weaknesses. We will even discuss Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. Then we move on to relationships. In this unit we talk about how we get along with other people in our lives. Our third unit helps us come up with problem solving strategies to use as problems or other issues arise, such as peer pressure and bullying. Finally we discuss peer pressure as it relates to chemical and drug use as well as situations that might make us uncomfortable or unsafe.

Each month the Social Development Committee will introduce us to the Book of the Month to share and discuss with the students. Please ask your child about the Social Development Book of the Month. It is my understanding that these books are available at the Chester Public Library as well. If you are unable to borrow it from the library, please let me know, and I will find a copy that you can borrow from our school. These books tend to lead to really great discussions.
